I’ll admit I approached *Perennial Gardening* with skepticism—another audiobook promising a ‘foolproof’ garden? But Rosser’s approach won me over by page three (or rather, minute 12). The book’s structure is its secret weapon: it’s organized by *problems*, not plants. Struggling with a shady slope? There’s a 20-minute section on groundcovers that thrive in gloom. Dealing with deer? Rosser ranks perennials by ‘edibility’ to critters, complete with a darkly humorous anecdote about his own hosta massacre. Ivan Busenius’s narration elevates the material—his dry delivery when describing ‘the black thumb tax’ (i.e., replacing dead plants annually) had me laughing in my car. That said, the audiobook isn’t perfect. The chapter on dividing perennials assumes you already know how to *identify* crowns and roots, which might leave absolute beginners scratching their heads. And while I appreciate the lack of fluff, I wished for a companion PDF with the ‘top 10 workhorse perennials’ list—memorizing Latin names while driving is a tall order. Where this audiobook *shines* is in its refusal to sugarcoat the work. Rosser devotes a whole section to ‘the ugly phase’—that awkward year or two when your garden looks like a sad patchwork of sticks—and how to power through it. The production quality is polished, though I docked half a star for the occasional over-enunciation of botanical terms (Busenius, we *know* how to say *Echinacea*). Still, this is the rare gardening book that respects your time and intelligence. If you’ve ever killed a peony from kindness (guilty) or wasted money on ‘deer-resistant’ labels (so very guilty), this audiobook will save you both. Just don’t blame me when you start side-eyeing your neighbor’s monochrome lawn.
