Playing Days

I’ll admit, I picked up *Playing Days* expecting another *Friday Night Lights*-style underdog saga, but what I got was messier, funnier, and far more human. Markovits—writing under the thinnest of fictional veils—captures the absurdity of being a semi-pro athlete in Europe with such specificity that you’ll wince at the details: the way a coach’s pep talk sounds like a eulogy, the team’s collective delusion that they’re one break away from the big leagues, the way a love affair with a teammate’s wife (a woman as adrift as he is) feels less like passion and more like two people clinging to a lifeboat. The prose is lean and unsentimental, but it’s Zach Villa’s narration that sells it. He nails the protagonist’s mix of cynicism and vulnerability, delivering lines like *“We were all just killing time until something better came along”* with the weight of a man who knows nothing better is coming. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle. The basketball scenes—when they’re sharp—are electric, but Markovits occasionally gets lost in the weeds of league politics or the monotony of road trips. And while the love story avoids cliché, it sometimes feels undercooked, like Markovits is holding back just when you want him to dig deeper. Still, the audiobook’s production is flawless: the ambient noise of a gym, the muffled German chatter in the background—it’s immersive without being gimmicky. By the end, you won’t remember the final score of any game, but you’ll remember the ache of wanting something you’re not sure you ever really wanted in the first place.
