Zach Villa’s performance is the reason this audiobook lingers like a half-remembered dream. His voice for Mira, a woman whose mind is unraveling in real time, is a masterclass in controlled desperation. When the corporate antagonists speak, Villa’s tone drips with the kind of smug detachment that makes you want to toss your headphones across the room. The sound design deserves its own round of applause too; the layering of distorted in-game audio with Mira’s internal monologue creates a disorienting, almost tactile experience. I found myself pausing after chapters just to remind myself that I wasn’t actually inside a failing VR system. That said, the book isn’t without its hiccups. The third act rushes past some critical emotional beats, leaving Mira’s transformation feeling a little too neat after the visceral chaos of the first two acts. And while Villa’s performance is stellar, there were moments where the AI voices felt slightly too cartoonish, breaking the immersion just enough to pull me out. That minor nitpick aside, *Patch 17* is a standout listen.
