I’ll admit, I was skeptical when the blurb promised a ‘prison break from a locked plane.’ But within minutes of hitting play, Nick Podehl’s narration had me hooked. His voice is the audiobook equivalent of a perfectly tempered sword—sharp where it needs to be, flexible where it counts. The real magic, though, is in Akella’s world. Erantia isn’t just a setting; it’s a character, a living puzzle where magic is a dying art and machines hum with forgotten purpose. The way Roman’s escape unfolds feels messy and brilliant, like a heist pulled off by a team of misfits with too much ambition. That said, the audiobook isn’t flawless. The pacing lags slightly in the middle act when the lore dumps pile up, and some of the side characters blur together in the chaos. But Podehl’s performance sells even the clunkiest exposition with charisma. By the final act, when the stakes hit cosmic levels, I was fully invested—gritty, mystical, and impossible to pause. If you want fantasy that doesn’t play by the rules, this is your audiobook.
