Quincas Borba

Listening to *Quincas Borba* narrated by Bernardo De Paula feels like being let in on a centuries-old secret—one that’s both hilarious and deeply unsettling. De Paula’s voice is perfectly matched to Machado’s aloof, almost clinical irony. He doesn’t overact the absurdity; instead, he lets it unfold naturally, which makes Rubião’s descent into delusion all the more tragic. The way he voices the entitled schemers—especially the oily Cristiano and the manipulative Sofia—is masterful, each character dripping with faux charm. I particularly appreciated how he handles the philosophical interruptions, like the fictional 'Humanitism' doctrine; De Paula delivers them with just enough seriousness to highlight their ridiculousness without breaking immersion. That said, the novel’s pacing can lag, especially in the middle section where Rubião’s grip on reality weakens. While De Paula maintains clarity, some passages feel repetitious in audio form, where internal spirals don’t land as sharply as they might on the page. Still, this is a minor flaw in an otherwise excellent production. The sound quality is crisp, with no distracting background noise. If you're looking for a literary audiobook that challenges as much as it entertains, this one earns its 12-hour runtime.
