The story itself is a beast: Cline crams in VR heists, AI philosophy, and a villain who’s basically a sentient meme. The pacing drags in the middle—there’s a 40-minute infodump about virtual real estate that tests even Nathan’s skills—but the final act delivers a payoff worthy of the hype. My biggest critique? The female characters often feel like afterthoughts, reduced to either love interests or plot devices. Still, the audiobook’s production is flawless—no distracting edits, no volume spikes—and Nathan’s performance elevates the material, especially in the quieter moments where Wade’s isolation cuts deep. If you loved the first book’s adventure but crave more bite, this is your fix. Just don’t expect easy answers.
