I went in expecting a lightweight dog biography and came out obsessed with Rin Tin Tin’s legacy. Orlean’s narration is so effortless you forget you’re listening to an author—it sounds like she’s sharing gossip over coffee, not reciting facts. Her delivery heightens the emotional punch of the story, especially when she dives into Rin Tin Tin’s early years with Lee Duncan, the soldier who rescued him from WWI ruins. The pacing is tight, but the real magic is in the details: a stray bullet whizzing past Duncan’s head during a dangerous shoot, the way Rin Tin Tin’s stunts became legend, and the bittersweet irony of a dog who saved Hollywood only to be nearly forgotten when sound arrived. That said, the book stumbles slightly in its middle act, where Orlean labors a bit too long on Rin Tin Tin’s descendants—it’s fascinating but drags compared to the high-stakes drama of his rise. Still, the production quality is top-tier, with subtle sound design that immerses you in the silent film era without ever feeling gimmicky.
