About This Audiobook

Sixteen-year-old Gabri isn’t expecting to inherit a war—or a baby dragon. Her ordinary life in a decaying industrial town collides with cosmic stakes when she’s thrust through a rift into Sanctum, a realm where magic bleeds into technology and ancient empires fight over the last fragments of power. The narration, delivered by Virtual Voice, leans into a crisp, almost clinical precision that contrasts sharply with the book’s soaring fantasy elements. Her cadence dips into urgency during action sequences and softens into wonder during quieter, world-building moments, making the experience feel like a high-definition film for the ears.

What sets Sanctum apart is its refusal to play by the usual YA rules. There’s no chosen-one syndrome here, just a stubborn girl armed with grit and an unexpected familiar. The worldbuilding is dense but intuitive, avoiding the pitfall of overwhelming exposition. Instead, the story unfolds like a chase—Gabri racing against time, her dragon’s fiery presence a constant reminder of the stakes. It’s a rare blend of gritty realism and soaring imagination, perfect for listeners who crave more than just another portal fantasy.

Editor's Review

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit I was skeptical when Virtual Voice’s narration kicked in with that almost robotic clarity—it felt too detached for a story bursting with magic and dragons. But within the first half hour, the delivery settled into something far more compelling. The crisp articulation actually works in Sanctum’s favor, emphasizing the stark contrast between Gabri’s gritted, human determination and the surreal wonders of Sanctum’s magic-tech fusion. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle act. A few too many info-dumps about the world’s lore slow the momentum just when the plot should be accelerating. Gabri herself is a refreshing protagonist—flawed, sarcastic, and refreshingly uninterested in being a hero. Her dynamic with the dragon, a creature both adorable and terrifying, is the heart of the story. The audiobook’s production is top-tier, with subtle environmental cues that place you right in the action, though I wish the dragon’s growls were mixed a bit louder—they’re too often buried under dialogue. Overall, Sanctum isn’t perfect, but it’s a bold, unpredictable ride for listeners tired of the same old YA tropes. Virtual Voice’s performance elevates it from good to great, even if the story occasionally trips over its own ambition.
