Scarlet (German edition)

I’ll admit, I was skeptical when I started *Scarlet*. Another urban fantasy with vampires in waistcoats? Sign me out. But by chapter three, I was hooked—and not just because the dragon in this story has the ego of a Victorian dandy. Cogman’s worldbuilding is the kind that makes you pause mid-audiobook to say, *Wait, they have a secret society for *everything*?* The rules of magic here are delightfully arbitrary (one moment you’re cursing a rival, the next you’re negotiating a blood debt), and the way the story balances espionage and derring-do feels fresh. My only gripe? The middle act drags a bit—like a London fog that won’t lift—though Schepmann’s narration keeps it tolerable. The production is top-tier, with subtle sound design that places you in the heart of the action without gimmicks. Schepmann’s performance is the real MVP, though. She nails the balance between sardonic and sincere, especially in scenes where her heroine, Copperspoon, has to outmaneuver a vampire lord who *definitely* thinks he’s the smartest person in the room. My one critique? The German edition’s pacing occasionally stumbles over compound sentences, making some dialogue feel a tad stilted. But that’s a minor quibble in an audiobook that otherwise sparkles with invention and energy. If you love fantasy that’s clever, charming, and just a little bit wicked, *Scarlet* is a must-listen.
