Scottish Werebear: A Second Chance

Patrick Blackthorne’s narration is the secret sauce here—his Scots inflections are subtle enough to feel authentic without veering into caricature, and his ability to toggle between James’s weary martyr vibe and Isla’s razor-sharp sarcasm is genuinely impressive. He nails the rhythm of the dialogue, which is no small feat given how dialogue-heavy this book is, and his pacing ensures there’s never a lull longer than a heartbeat. That said, the production feels a touch too polished for a story that’s supposed to have a scrappy underdog feel; the audio levels on some ambient sounds—rain, rustling fabric—are almost suspiciously pristine, as if the audio engineer vacuum-sealed the forest noises. The plot also stumbles slightly when it tries to weave in global conspiracy elements; they feel tacked-on rather than organic, and the resolution wraps up a bit too neatly for my taste. Still, the core romance is winning in all the right ways, and Blackthorne’s performance elevates what could’ve been a forgettable fluff piece into something charming and compulsively listenable. If you’re craving a paranormal romance that’s more ‘tea and tartan’ than ‘gothic nightmare,’ this one’s a solid bet.
