Scottish Werebear, Books 1-3

I’ll admit, I side-eyed the concept of ‘werebear lairds’ at first—until Patrick Blackthorne’s narration sold me in the first five minutes. His performance is *chefs-kiss* perfect for this material: he nails the Scottish accents (no cringe-worthy slips into Irish, thank god) and gives each bear shifter a distinct vocal texture, from the gruff, protective alpha to the wry, sarcastic beta. The stories themselves are catnip for paranormal romance fans: fated mates, instant chemistry, and just enough external conflict (rogue hunters, clan rivalries) to keep things from feeling like a series of steamy vignettes. *Mostly.* That said, the novella format has limits. The middle story, *Bear Necessities*, feels rushed—its heroine’s backstory gets shortchanged, and the conflict resolves so abruptly I checked my player for skips. And while Moone’s dialogue sparkles, the worldbuilding sometimes relies on shorthand (‘ancient bear magic’) that’ll leave lore-hounds wanting. Still, for a 7-hour listen, it’s a steal: Blackthorne’s delivery turns even the cheesiest lines (‘Yer mine, lass’) into butter, and the humor (a bear shifter complaining about ‘human beds’ being too small) keeps it from taking itself too seriously. If you’re after a low-stakes, high-heat audiobook to fold laundry to—or, let’s be honest, *ignore the laundry entirely*—this delivers. Just don’t expect Shakespearean depth.
