I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes at the ‘brooding SEAL finds love in a small town’ premise—until Levine’s narration pulled me in during the first chapter. There’s a scene where Mason, the hero of Book 1, silently catalogues exit routes in a crowded bar while pretending to listen to his date. The way Levine’s voice tightens almost imperceptibly, like a coil ready to snap, sold me on the series. This isn’t insta-love; it’s insta-*distrust*, and the slow unraveling of these characters’ defenses is where Seton shines. I particularly loved how the romance in Book 3 hinges on a heroine who’s a single mom *and* a mechanic—no damsels here, just women who can change their own oil and call the heroes on their BS. That said, the series isn’t perfect. The villains in Book 2 veer into cartoonish territory (a corrupt developer with a mustache-twirling level of malice), and the internal monologues occasionally repeat themselves—yes, we *get* that the hero feels unworthy, but we don’t need the reminder every other chapter. The audio production is flawless, though Levine’s female voices sometimes blur together, lacking the distinctiveness of his male characters. Still, the chemistry scenes sizzle, especially when the narration drops to a near-whisper during intimate moments. If you love romance with emotional stakes higher than the sex scenes, and heroes who earn their happy endings through actual growth (not just a grand gesture), this is your next binge. Just maybe skip the mustache villain’s chapters on 1.5x speed.
