Seduction

I’ll admit it: I picked up *Seduction* expecting a guilty pleasure, and in some ways, it delivered—just not the way I anticipated. The premise is so deliciously trashy (student/professor *and* a pregnancy? in 2024?) that I was ready to suspend disbelief, but the execution wobbles between campy fun and eye-rolling implausibility. The Virtual Voice narrator is the wild card here. On one hand, its flat affect makes every line sound like a Wikipedia entry, which *somehow* works for the more ridiculous scenes (imagine a Siri voice announcing, *“His hands gripped my thesis like it was the last lifeline in a storm”*). On the other, it drains any tenderness from the romantic moments, leaving them feeling transactional. The story’s biggest strength—and weakness—is its breakneck pacing. Subplots sprint in and out (a rival love interest? a secret research scandal?) with little payoff, as if Smoak worried we’d get bored. The professor’s internal monologues veer from possessive to bizarrely philosophical, and the heroine’s “happy accident” pregnancy is treated with the gravity of a missed coffee order. That said, there’s a perverse joy in how committed the book is to its own madness. The production quality is clean, though the lack of vocal variation means you’ll occasionally lose track of who’s speaking in dialogue-heavy scenes. **Critiques?** The ending wraps up *too* neatly, like a bow on a dumpster fire, and the Virtual Voice’s mispronunciation of “tenure” (as *ten-YUR*) pulled me out of the story every time. Still, if you’re in the mood for something so boldly ridiculous it circles back to entertaining, this might be your audiobook equivalent of a late-night taco binge: messy, questionable, but oddly satisfying in the moment.
