About This Audiobook

Imagine trading a mortgage for a 24-foot sailboat and charting a course to the exotic ports of the East—without GPS, without a trust fund, and without ever once feeling sorry for yourself. That’s the gutsy reality at the heart of *Seraffyn’s Oriental Adventure*, Lin and Larry Pardey’s chronicle of their slow-motion circumnavigation aboard their tiny, self-built cutter. What makes this memoir sing is its refusal to romanticize hardship. The Pardeys don’t just endure; they problem-solve with the kind of stubborn resourcefulness that makes readers wonder, 'Could I do that?'—or at least, 'How bad could it really be?' Michelle Murillo’s narration crackles with the same no-nonsense energy as the couple’s storytelling, her voice shifting effortlessly between dry humor and quiet awe as she guides listeners through storms, sandbars, and the occasional bureaucratic nightmare in a voice that feels like an old friend recounting a wild road trip over beers.

What sets this audiobook apart is its unflinching attention to the mundane alongside the extraordinary. One minute, you’re marveling at the Pardeys’ ingenuity in jury-rigging a broken water pump in a Thai backwater; the next, you’re chuckling at Larry’s deadpan account of outsmarting a customs officer who insists their boat is 'too small to be a yacht.' Murillo’s performance doesn’t glamorize the sailor’s life—she leans into its grit, making the coconut milk you drink in a Fijian village taste as vivid as the diesel fumes in a Singapore marina. It’s a masterclass in how to turn 'discomfort' into 'adventure' without once sounding like a brochure.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit I was skeptical going in: another sailing memoir promising 'freedom on the high seas'? But *Seraffyn’s Oriental Adventure* won me over with its sheer audacity—and Michelle Murillo’s narration is 80% of the credit. She nails the Pardeys’ personalities perfectly: Lin’s practicality and Larry’s dry wit come through without ever feeling like caricatures. Her pacing is crisp, especially in tense moments—like the night they nearly broach in a rogue swell off the Andaman Sea—where she lets the silence between sentences hang just long enough to make you hold your breath. The production is clean, with subtle environmental cues (the creak of the hull, the hiss of a radio) that immerse you without overpowering the story. That said, there are two hiccups. First, the audiobook’s chapter divisions feel arbitrary, chopping off mid-anecdote at times, which is jarring when a story is still simmering. Second, the Pardeys’ privilege—while never ignored—does occasionally peek through in ways that might rankle listeners who’ve never had to worry about affording a plane ticket, let alone a boat repair. Still, this is a minor quibble in a record that otherwise feels like eavesdropping on a couple of legends swapping war stories. By the time you reach the epilogue, you won’t just want to sail off into the sunset—you’ll be mentally drafting your own route.
