Murillo’s narration is the secret weapon here—her delivery is intimate without being saccharine, and she lands every punchline with the precision of a stand-up comedian who’s also read Bukowski. The book’s strength lies in its refusal to romanticize the road. Hendricks doesn’t shy away from the hollow moments of travel—the aimless days, the tourist traps, the crushing weight of jet lag—yet she frames them as essential, even sacred. My favorite moment comes when she dissects the “bucket-list mentality,” calling it out for what it is: a way to perform depth without doing the work. Production-wise, the audio is clean and unobtrusive, letting the words breathe without flashy transitions or gimmicks. That said, the audiobook’s brevity is both a strength and a slight drawback. At times, I craved deeper dives into certain ideas, especially those around cultural appropriation and sustainability in travel, which get only cursory treatment. Still, for listeners short on time but hungry for perspective, this is the audiobook equivalent of a strong espresso shot—intense, thought-provoking, and over far too soon.
