The standout section covers his decade-plus touring with John Mellencamp, where Aronoff doesn’t just name-drop; he recreates the chaos of traveling on a shoestring budget, dealing with venue sound guys who’d rather be playing shuffleboard, and still nailing the kick drum at 3 a.m. in some godforsaken VFW hall. The production nails it too: no overproduced reverb, no lazy editing—just the occasional clack of sticks against cymbals when the story calls for it, grounding the whole thing in the visceral reality of the kit. My only quibble? Aronoff’s addiction to sports metaphors (“This album was like a two-minute drill in the red zone”) gets repetitive after the third Super Bowl reference, and the chapter on his early years with Sammy Hagar drags like a festival setlist stuck in soundcheck.
