About This Audiobook

*Shadows in Zamboula* isn’t just another Conan romp—it’s a feverish, nightmarish dive into the underbelly of a city where every alley reeks of betrayal and the air hums with the promise of violence. Robert E. Howard strips away the epic battles and sprawling landscapes here, trapping his barbarian hero in a labyrinth of close-quarters brutality: a tavern brawl that spirals into a cult’s den, a woman’s desperate plea that’s either salvation or a trap, and a villain whose name—Baal-pteor—should send a chill down your spine. This isn’t the Conan of thrones and conquests; it’s the Conan who survives by his wits, his fists, and a ruthlessness that borders on nihilism.

Harry Shaw’s narration is a masterclass in gritty, no-nonsense delivery. His voice cracks like a whip during fight scenes, then drops to a growl for the story’s more sinister moments, especially when channeling Baal-pteor’s unhinged zealotry. The audiobook’s brevity (just 85 minutes) isn’t a flaw—it’s a strength, packing in more tension per minute than most fantasy epics dare. The sound design is minimal but effective: the clatter of steel, the distant chant of cultists, and the occasional guttural scream all heighten the story’s oppressive atmosphere. If you love your sword-and-sorcery with a side of existential dread, this is peak Howard.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ve listened to a *lot* of Conan audiobooks, and *Shadows in Zamboula* stands out because it feels like Howard took a knife to the genre’s usual excesses and carved something leaner, meaner, and far more unsettling. The story drops you into the action immediately—Conan waking up in a fleapit tavern, already halfway to a brawl—and never lets up. What follows is less a quest than a descent: into the city’s underworld, into the madness of its cults, and into the kind of moral ambiguity that makes you question whether Conan is the hero or just the least terrible monster in the room. Harry Shaw’s performance is *almost* perfect. His Conan is gruff but not cartoonish, his pacing razor-sharp during the story’s relentless set pieces. Where he truly excels is in the quieter moments—like the eerie calm before Baal-pteor’s first appearance, where his voice drops to a whisper that makes your skin crawl. My only critique? The female characters (particularly the doomed Totrasmek’s daughter) occasionally veer into breathy, damsel-in-distress territory that feels out of step with the story’s otherwise brutal realism. And while the abbreviated runtime keeps the tension high, I wouldn’t have minded another 10 minutes to flesh out the cult’s rituals—they’re sketched in broad, terrifying strokes, but I wanted more. Still, this is sword-and-sorcery at its most visceral. The production values are crisp, the violence is palpable, and the ending—abrupt, bloody, and morally ambiguous—lingers like a bad dream. If you’re tired of fantasy that romanticizes its heroes, this is the antidote.
