Silent Sun

I’ll admit, I approached *Silent Sun* with skepticism. Hard sci-fi can often feel like a lecture disguised as a novel, or worse, a tech manual with dialogue. But Morris pulls off something trickier: a story where the science *is* the conflict, yet the characters—flawed, stubborn, occasionally infuriating—drive the tension. The protagonist, an everyman astronomer, isn’t a genius or a soldier; he’s a guy who stumbles into a puzzle bigger than himself, and his panic feels *earned*. The first act is slow by design, mirroring the plodding reality of scientific discovery, but once the dominoes start falling (around Chapter 8), the payoff is worth it. That said, the female lead’s arc occasionally feels undercooked—her motivations shift abruptly in the final act, a rare misstep in an otherwise tightly plotted story. Daniel Thomas May’s performance is a masterclass in audiobook narration for technical material. He handles the jargon—*coronal mass ejections*, *solar minima*—with the ease of a professor, but his real talent is making the human moments land. Listen to how his voice cracks during a late-night phone call where a character realizes the scale of the threat, or the way he speeds up slightly during action sequences, like a scientist trying (and failing) to stay calm. My only critique? The sound mixing occasionally drowns out his lower register during whispering scenes—nothing catastrophic, but noticeable with headphones. Still, this is a standout in a genre where narration can make or break the experience. If you’ve ever stared at the sun (safely, I hope) and wondered *what if?*, this audiobook will haunt you—in the best way.
