I came to Slipstream expecting a sequel that coasted on the success of The Chronos Files, but Walker delivers a second act that outpaces its predecessor in ambition and risk. Emily M. Wilson’s narration is the secret weapon: she transforms what could’ve been a cacophony of accents and eras into a seamless orchestration. My only critique is that the middle act occasionally stalls when Walker indulges in too much exposition about quantum mechanics; the concepts are fascinating, but the sheer volume of technobabble risks alienating listeners who just want the characters to keep moving. On the flip side, the finale is a gut-punch: Walker ties together the Russian Revolution, Prohibition-era bootleggers, and near-future tech in a way that feels both inevitable and brutal. The audiobook’s pacing mirrors its plot—relentless, with the occasional breathtaking detour. If you loved the first book, Slipstream will reward you; if you’re new to the series, be prepared to sprint from the starting gate.
