Peter Kenny’s narration is the secret sauce here, transforming what could’ve been a dense, cerebral novel into something fluid and immersive. His voice shifts effortlessly between Mawukana’s weary resolve, the clipped arrogance of imperial figures, and the eerie calm of alien entities, making every conversation feel like a high-stakes negotiation. The pacing is deliberate, almost glacial at times, which mirrors the story’s themes of decay and inevitability—but be warned: if you crave breakneck action, you’ll find yourself tapping your foot impatiently. The audiobook’s production is top-tier, with no audible distractions to pull you out of the experience. That said, the sheer density of lore and subplots occasionally risks overwhelming the listener, especially in the middle act where the conspiracy threads tangle into a Gordian knot. Still, by the finale, you’ll either be exhilarated by the payoff or questioning why you let North play you like this—and that’s the mark of a story that lingers. Kenny’s performance sells it completely.
