About This Audiobook

Geralt of Rivia isn’t your typical hero—he’s a genetically enhanced monster slayer with scars, sarcasm, and a surprising moral compass, and *The Last Wish* throws him into a series of dark, folkloric quests that redefine fantasy storytelling. This isn’t high-minded idealism; it’s gritty, morally gray adventuring where the real monsters often wear human faces. Sapkowski blends Slavic mythology with sharp political commentary and dry wit, crafting stand-alone tales that cohere into a rich, immersive world long before the saga turns epic. It’s fantasy for readers tired of chosen ones and prophecies—this is a world where magic is unpredictable, rewards are meager, and every contract comes with consequences. Peter Kenny’s narration is nothing short of transformative. His gravelly take on Geralt feels lived-in and authentic, while his distinct voices for Dandelion, sorceresses, and even cursed kings bring Sapkowski’s ensemble to life without veering into caricature. The production is clean, well-paced, and subtly atmospheric—just enough whisper and echo to suggest mist-laden forests and crumbling castles. This audiobook stands out for how naturally it balances action, philosophy, and dry humor, all anchored by Kenny’s masterful control of tone. If you want fantasy with teeth, wit, and emotional weight, this is where to start.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *The Last Wish* knowing only the Netflix buzz and video games, and was surprised by how literary and layered it felt in audio form. Peter Kenny doesn’t just narrate—he performs. His timing is impeccable, especially during Geralt’s deadpan retorts or Dandelion’s bombastic poems. I found myself rewinding just to savor a vocal inflection. The way he shifts between gruff stoicism and sudden flashes of vulnerability makes Geralt feel fully human, despite the mutations. That said, the book’s structure—episodic, with later chapters hinting at future arcs—means pacing dips in the middle. One or two of the monster-of-the-week stories feel less urgent, and without visual cues, it’s easy to lose track of minor characters. Still, the emotional punch of the framing story, especially Geralt’s confrontation with destiny and love, lands hard thanks to Kenny’s restrained delivery. The production quality is excellent: consistent levels, no distracting artifacts, and just enough ambient texture to enhance immersion without overdoing it. My only real critique? Some of the Eastern European names and places might fly by too quickly for new listeners—there’s no pronunciation guide baked in. But that’s a minor flaw in an otherwise stellar audiobook experience. This isn’t escapism—it’s fantasy with weight, and it earns its cult status.
