The magic system is one of the most original I’ve encountered in military fantasy—not because it’s flashy, but because it’s *transactional*. Every spell has a cost, every advancement a trade-off, and the "soft ceiling" of the title isn’t just a metaphor; it’s a literal barrier that separates the elite from the expendable. Ellis excels at making bureaucracy feel like a villain, and the cadets’ internalized competition is more terrifying than any monster. My two critiques: the pacing in the middle sagged slightly during a protracted strategy sequence (though the payoff was worth it), and the Virtual Voice occasionally stumbles over emotional beats—ironic, given that the story’s power lies in its emotional repression. But the ending? Brutal, inevitable, and perfectly in keeping with a world that doesn’t believe in happy endings—just survivors.
