About This Audiobook

Something About a Soldier is a gripping and unvarnished portrayal of military life, told with unflinching honesty by Charles Willeford. This audiobook is distinctive for its stark, unromanticized depiction of the harsh realities of soldiering, which sets it apart from more sanitized accounts of military experience. Dan McGowan's narration style brings a sense of grit and authenticity to the story, drawing the listener into the world of the barracks and the battlefield.

The audiobook's strength lies in its ability to balance the brutality and boredom of military life with moments of tenderness and introspection. Willeford's writing is vivid and evocative, conjuring the sights, sounds, and smells of a bygone era. The result is a listening experience that is both deeply immersive and thought-provoking, inviting the listener to reflect on the human cost of war and the complexities of the military psyche.

AudioBook Atlas

I was blown away by Dan McGowan's narration of Something About a Soldier - his gravelly voice and deadpan delivery perfectly capture the world-weary cynicism of Charles Willeford's prose. The story itself is a riveting and unflinching portrayal of military life, full of vivid characters and memorable episodes. One of the standout elements of the audiobook is its pacing, which moves seamlessly from moments of high tension to periods of quiet introspection. If I have any criticisms, it's that some of the supporting characters feel a bit one-dimensional at times, and the production could benefit from a bit more dynamic sound design to bring the story to life. Nevertheless, this is a minor quibble in what is otherwise a compelling and deeply affecting listen.
