About This Audiobook

Charles Willeford's 'The Way We Die Now' is a gripping crime novel that defies conventions. Narrator Stephen Bowlby brings Hoke Moseley, a rugged Miami homicide detective, to life with his deadpan delivery and nuanced characterization. As Moseley navigates a complex web of corruption and deceit, Bowlby's narration injects a sense of dark humor and irreverence, perfectly capturing the novel's offbeat tone.

The audiobook's pacing is relentless, with a taut narrative that propels listeners through a world of moral ambiguity. Bowlby's performance is spot-on, conveying Moseley's world-weariness and dogged determination. The production is crisp and well-balanced, allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in the story.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I devoured 'The Way We Die Now' in a single, frenetic sitting - a testament to the audiobook's addictive pacing and Bowlby's compelling narration. Willeford's prose is lean and punchy, and Bowlby does an excellent job of conveying the novel's dark humor and surreal undertones. My only quibble is that some of the supporting characters feel a tad underdeveloped, but this is a minor complaint in an otherwise excellent production. One particularly effective element is the way Bowlby handles Moseley's inner monologues, conveying a sense of introspective unease that adds depth to the character. Overall, I'd highly recommend this audiobook to fans of gritty noir and crime fiction.
