About This Audiobook

P. G. Wodehouse’s *Something New* is a masterclass in comedic precision, where aristocratic absurdity meets farcical mishaps in the sprawling halls of Blandings Castle. This novel kicks off the beloved Blandings series with a stolen manuscript, a disgruntled pig, and a cast of schemers so perfectly pompous they’re impossible not to adore. Wodehouse orchestrates a social free-for-all—jilted lovers, bumbling detectives, and eccentric aunts—each character a tightly wound spring of comic potential. It’s less about stakes and more about style: the frothy elegance of a perfectly turned phrase, the glee of a plot spiraling out of control through sheer social ineptitude. B.J. Harrison’s narration is the ideal match for Wodehouse’s wry tone—understated, impeccably timed, and never overplayed. His voice modulates with dry wit, giving each character a distinct flavor without slipping into caricature. The production is crisp, allowing the language to shine. If you appreciate verbal dexterity and stories where no plan survives contact with a butler, this audiobook delivers vintage humor with modern clarity. It’s not just literature—it’s comedy as high art, best enjoyed with a stiff drink and zero expectations of seriousness.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ve listened to a fair share of Wodehouse on audio, and B.J. Harrison remains my gold standard. His performance in *Something New* is restrained in all the right ways—never pushing the comedy, letting Wodehouse’s writing do the heavy lifting. The pacing is excellent; you can feel the tension build in quiet moments before everything collapses into glorious chaos. I especially loved how he voices Lord Emsworth—mild, distracted, utterly obsessed with his prize pig—with just a slight tremor in the voice that makes him instantly endearing. The audio production is clean, no hiccups, and the chapter breaks are well-placed for binge-listening. That said, the novel’s middle sags a bit—there’s a stretch where the manuscript subplot gets tangled in its own cleverness, and even Harrison can’t fully mask the repetitiveness. Also, the portrayal of some female characters still leans into early-20th-century tropes, which might grate on modern ears. But these are minor quibbles. Overall, this is Wodehouse at his most playful, delivered with the kind of audiobook craftsmanship that makes you want to re-read the whole Blandings series—preferably in one indulgent weekend.
