As someone who’s tired of fantasy series where the ‘hard part’ ends when the villain dies, Duskborn’s focus on the *aftermath* felt refreshingly brutal. Marcus Shaw is a protagonist who wins battles but loses sleep, and the audiobook’s strength lies in how it forces you to marinate in his paranoia. The Virtual Voice narrator’s flat affect took me a chapter to adjust to—this isn’t a performance with soaring highs or growled threats, but a steady, almost detached recitation that weirdly *heightens* the tension. When a character betrays Marcus, the narrator’s lack of inflection makes it land like a gut punch: no dramatic foreshadowing, just the cold fact of it. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle. Duskborn’s worldbuilding is meticulous, but the audiobook’s lack of distinct character voices (a limitation of Virtual Voice) turns some of the Academy’s political debates into a blur of indistinguishable perspectives. And while I appreciated the morally gray choices, a few secondary characters—like the amplifier Liora—felt underutilized, their potential arcs sacrificed to Marcus’s single-minded focus. Still, the final act’s twist (which hinges on a *brutal* reinterpretation of the Pack’s ‘victory’) left me staring at my phone in disbelief. This isn’t a fantasy for escapism; it’s for listeners who want their magic systems laced with cynicism and their heroes to earn every scrap of trust.
