I went into *Stillhouse Lake* expecting another domestic thriller where the twist is telegraphed halfway through the first act. Instead, I got sucker-punched by a story that refuses to play nice. The first act is brutal in the best way—Caine doesn’t waste time easing you in. By the time Gina’s life unravels, I was already gripping the arms of my chair, white-knuckling the pause button just so I could process what I’d just heard. Gwen’s transformation from meek wife to someone who can gut a man with his own kitchen knife is messy, ugly, and completely believable. Sutton-Smith’s narration is the secret weapon here. She nails the Midwest twang of the original Gina while somehow making Gwen’s hardened edges feel authentic, not forced. Her voice for Gwen’s teenage daughter, Aurora, is especially haunting—like listening to a kid who’s had too much of the world too soon. The pacing in the audiobook is flawless; the production doesn’t overdo it with unnecessary sound effects, letting the story and the performance carry the weight. My only critique? The middle act drags a bit in the paperback—I was glad the audiobook’s tempo kept me from lingering too long in the slow sections. The ending is a gut-punch of unresolved fury, but that’s not a flaw. It’s a feature. If you want a thriller that doesn’t give you a neat bow, this is it. I binged it in two sittings and woke up the next morning with my stomach in knots.
