I’ll admit, I approached *Street Freak* skeptical of yet another finance-bro memoir, but within 20 minutes, I was hooked—not by the trading strategies (though they’re here, in all their nerdy glory), but by Dillian’s ability to make his own unraveling so damn compelling. This isn’t a book about *how* to succeed on Wall Street; it’s about what happens when you *almost* do, and the cost of that near-miss. Dillian’s writing is sharp, self-lacerating, and darkly funny, but it’s LJ Ganser’s narration that sells it. He nails the tone: equal parts cocky trader, exhausted survivor, and the guy who *still* can’t believe he got away with half the stuff he did. His delivery in the more chaotic passages—like Dillian’s spiraling drug use or the Lehman collapse—has a breathless, almost frantic quality that mirrors the text perfectly. That said, this isn’t a flawless listen. Dillian’s self-mythologizing can wear thin; there’s a stretch where his ‘I was a genius’ schtick feels less like humility and more like a flex, and the pacing drags slightly in the middle when the financial jargon gets dense. (If you’re not into bond math, you *will* zone out for 10 minutes.) But the raw moments—his breakdown in a hotel room, the hollow victory of ‘making it’—more than make up for it. The production is clean, with no distracting edits, though I wish the audio had a touch more dynamic range to emphasize the emotional whiplash. Still, by the end, you’ll feel like you’ve lived through Dillian’s highs and lows with him—which, given the subject matter, is both a triumph and a warning.
