The worldbuilding is dense but never overwhelming, doling out lore through asides—like how the LA River is actually a ‘mana sink’—that make the city feel alive in ways even native Angelenos might miss. Nathan Agin’s performance is the audiobook’s secret weapon. He nails Melvin’s mix of exhaustion and reluctant wonder, but the real standout is his voice for Professor Vex, a man who sounds like he’s two failed experiments away from a nervous breakdown. The production is clean, though I’d dock half a point for a few instances where the editing makes transitions between scenes feel abrupt—like a record scratch where there should be a smooth fade.
