The Archon

I went into The Archon expecting a solid cyberpunk story, but what I got was a rich, thought-provoking exploration of what it means to be human in a world where technology is rapidly outpacing our understanding of it. Prokofiev's world-building is meticulous, with a level of detail that's both impressive and occasionally overwhelming – I found myself getting lost in the minutiae of the city's infrastructure and the politics of the Archons' downfall. At times, the pacing feels a bit uneven, with long stretches of exposition that slow the narrative to a crawl. But these moments are more than made up for by the sheer energy and momentum of the story when it takes off. Thron's narration is a major part of the book's appeal, bringing a level of emotional depth and nuance to the characters that's all too rare in this genre. Without a doubt, The Archon is a must-listen for fans of science fiction and cyberpunk – just be prepared to spend some quality time in the world of Neo Ark.
