The Best of the Realms

I went into this expecting a nostalgic dip into Salvatore’s catalog, but what Ross’s narration delivered was a full-body experience. Her performance is the kind that makes you pause mid-credit to replay a scene just to bask in her delivery of a particularly cutting barb or a hero’s exhausted sigh. The stories themselves are a mixed bag—some hit like a battle-axe to the chest (*“The Third Level” is a relentless, claustrophobic nightmare*), while others meander like a halfling on a post-meal stroll (*“The Dowry” suffers from over-exposition*). But even the weaker entries have their charms, like a well-aged cheese: an acquired taste, but one that rewards patience. Production-wise, the audio is crisp, with just enough ambient reverb to sell the cavernous halls of Menzoberranzan or the whispering woods of the High Forest. My only gripe? The anthology’s lack of connective tissue—Ross’s narration bridges gaps, but a framing device or even a single interstitial poem would’ve elevated it from a greatest-hits reel to a true saga. Still, if you’re a Salvatore veteran, this is a must-listen; if you’re new, it’s a brutal, beautiful introduction to a world where even the light casts shadows.
