I spent eight hours and forty-six minutes utterly convinced that the Cambrian Mountains were actively plotting against DCI Warlow. Tobias Weatherburn’s narration is the reason why. From the first gravelly sentence to the final, chilling twist, his voice carries the weight of a man who’s heard too many lies and seen too many bodies. The mid-Wales setting is so vivid I could taste the peat in the air and feel the damp seeping into my bones. Dylan’s plotting is ruthless, avoiding the clichés of rural noir by grounding the mystery in plausible, if disturbing, human behavior. The pacing never lags, but the real kicker is the way the story forces you to question every character’s motives—even the ones you’d trust in a heartbeat. Weatherburn sells it, too; his Welsh inflections lend authenticity, and his knack for timing sharpens the tension in scenes where silence speaks louder than screams. That said, the audiobook isn’t flawless. Weatherburn’s performance, while excellent, occasionally stumbles over a few technical terms (Welsh place names, forensic details) that feel a beat too practiced, like he’s reading from a script meant for eyes, not ears. And while the rural Welsh dialect is immersive, it might alienate listeners who prefer a more neutral tone—though it’s a minor quibble for anyone wanting to sink into the locale. The biggest critique? The ending, while satisfying, ties up too neatly for a story this bleak. A little more moral ambiguity would’ve elevated it from great to unforgettable.
