The middle act—Buck’s sled-dog education—drags slightly, with the narration’s monotone making London’s repetitive training scenes feel longer than they are. And while the abridgment trims fat, it occasionally sacrifices nuance; Francois and Perrault’s bond with Buck gets short shrift, which dulls the emotional punch of their farewell. Still, the final act *soars*, especially the legendary ‘ghost dog’ sequences, where the narration’s detachment amplifies the mythic quality.
