The Coming Dark

I went into The Coming Dark expecting another space opera with flashy battles and a chosen-one arc, but what I got was far more compelling—a gritty, emotionally charged examination of merit, identity, and systemic exclusion, all wrapped in a taut military sci-fi framework. Scott Aiello’s narration is a standout. He doesn’t oversell the drama; instead, he lets Liam’s quiet desperation simmer beneath a professional tone, making the moments when that composure cracks all the more powerful. I especially appreciated how Aiello handles the training sequences—each breath, command, and malfunction feels tactile, thanks to the crisp production and his precise timing. The world-building is dense but never overwhelming, with Molles doling out lore through action and tension rather than exposition dumps. That said, the middle section drags slightly under repetitive trial simulations, and a few supporting characters feel underdeveloped, especially the instructors. Still, the final third unleashes a cascade of revelations that reframe everything that came before, making the wait worthwhile. The audio's dynamic range—sudden silences, weapon hums, distant alarms—adds a cinematic layer you’d miss in print. This isn’t just a story about becoming a hero. It’s about what happens when the system designed to create heroes rejects you for being human. And that hit harder than any laser blast.
