The Complete Wizard of Oz (Annotated)

I lasted 12 hours into this audiobook before my brain turned to mush—partly Baum’s fault, partly the narration. Virtual Voice’s performance is impressively consistent, but that’s also the problem: a synthetic voice doesn’t breathe life into Baum’s oddly modern dialogue or the absurd charm of his creatures. The first few Oz novels sparkle, but by *Ozma of Oz*, the formula feels stale. Dorothy’s adventures devolve into checklist quests (lion? check. Scarecrow? check. Kansas? eventually), and Baum’s attempts at world-building read like half-baked D&D campaign notes. The annotation layer is intriguing—footnotes teasing historical context or Baum’s personal quirks—but it’s buried under the sheer volume. My biggest gripe? The pacing drags during the middle books, where moralizing and recycled tropes replace wonder. Still, if you’re a completist or a scholar, Virtual Voice’s flat enunciation might actually help you focus on the text. For everyone else, this is a marathon best attempted in sprints.
