About This Audiobook

Karevik’s *The Cursed Assassin* isn’t just another grimdark fantasy—it’s a brutal dance between revenge and restraint. Eris Veyne, a legendary killer with a death wish, is forced into a twelve-year truce with the very king he’s spent a lifetime hunting. The catch? The curse binding them keeps Eris alive but makes every kill a temporary reprieve, while the King’s peace comes with its own horrors. Karevik’s worldbuilding is a filthy, blood-soaked playground where magic is as corrupting as the sword in Eris’s hand, and honor among thieves is a myth. This isn’t a story about heroism; it’s about a man teetering on the edge of sanity, clinging to violence as his only language, even when his victims start whispering back.

The audiobook shines thanks to Daniel Wisniewski’s narration, which balances Eris’s guttural cynicism with the eerie, measured cadence of the curse itself. Wisniewski doesn’t just voice characters—he weaponizes silence, letting the weight of a paused breath or a half-finished sentence hang like a blade over the listener’s neck. The production crackles with the same raw energy as the story, from the gritty sound design of tavern brawls to the unnerving stillness of Eris’s cursed moments. If you crave fantasy that smells like iron and regret, this audiobook will leave your pulse racing and your skin crawling.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

Daniel Wisniewski’s performance is the reason *The Cursed Assassin* works as an audiobook. He nails Eris’s voice—a mix of exhausted fury and dark amusement—but it’s his handling of secondary characters that steals the show. The King’s court, for instance, drips with aristocratic venom, each noble’s voice dripping like honey laced with poison. Wisniewski also does something rare: he makes the curse itself a character. The way he stretches vowels in Eris’s moments of pain, or sharpens consonants when the curse tightens its grip, turns what could’ve been a gimmick into something visceral. The pacing is relentless, but wisely, Karevik doesn’t rush the quieter scenes. Eris’s internal monologues—full of self-loathing and dark humor—are where the story lingers longest, and Wisniewski sells every syllable. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The twelve-year time jump midway through feels abrupt, and some side characters blur together despite Wisniewski’s best efforts. A few fight scenes also rely too much on sound effects without enough vocal distinction between combatants, making them harder to follow than they should be. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise stellar production. If you love antiheroes who are as broken as they are lethal, and a narrator who treats your ears like a battlefield, this is the audiobook for you. Just don’t listen before bed—you’ll be up all night, plotting revenge.
