I started listening on a February morning when the sky was a sheet of gray and my dating life was basically nonexistent. By the time the last novella wrapped at midnight on New Year’s Eve, I felt like I’d lived a whole year in under 27 hours. Amelia Mendez is the secret weapon here—her delivery is so vivid that I could practically smell the coconut sunscreen in the summer installment and taste the pumpkin-spice misery of the fall story. She nails the tonal shifts, too; one minute she’s cooing over a couple slow-dancing in a barn, the next she’s smirking while a heroine delivers a scathing put-down. The pacing is flawless, which is impressive given the anthology format; any slower and the short stories would feel like snack wrappers, any faster and the emotional beats would flatten. My only gripe? A couple of the endings felt abrupt—more denouement than resolution—and the production muffles the quieter emotional passages every now and then.
