The performance elevates Haley’s prose from immersive to inescapable, particularly in the intimate moments—like when a dying marine confesses his shame to the ghost of the Lion—or the gut-wrenching lull before a planetary purge. The pacing is relentless, but Armstrong never lets the tension flag, even during dense tactical passages. That said, the audiobook isn’t flawless. The sheer volume of characters (and their similar naming conventions) can get messy in the early hours, and the production has a few noticeable cuts where breaths or page-turns were left in. Still, these are minor quibbles in a symphony of noise. Where other Warhammer novels feel like they’re playing in a sandbox, *The Devastation of Baal* feels like the floor is giving way beneath you.
