I approached *The Dream* expecting a standard psychological thriller, but Kat Martin delivers something far more unsettling. Virtual Voice’s narration is a standout, adopting an almost clinical tone that contrasts sharply with the story’s descent into paranoia. Genny’s fragmented memories and Jack’s investigation unfold in parallel, each chapter peeling back a new layer of mystery. The pacing is deliberate, with Martin allowing the tension to simmer rather than erupt, which works well for the audio format. That said, the middle act drags slightly, and a few supporting characters feel underdeveloped—especially a pivotal figure whose motivations remain frustratingly vague. The narration occasionally stumbles over some clunky dialogue, but Virtual Voice’s performance elevates the material, making Genny’s desperation and Jack’s frustration palpable. By the time the truth surfaces, it’s satisfyingly cruel, though not entirely unexpected. If you crave a thriller that prioritizes atmosphere over spectacle, this is a solid pick.
