I went into *The Enhanced* expecting another generic dystopian slog, but Edge’s world grabbed me by the throat and refused to let go. The premise—humans evolving post-collapse into something *other* than human—could’ve been a mess in weaker hands, but Edge grounds it in brutal realism. The Enhanced aren’t just wielding superpowers; they’re *trapped* by them, their bodies rewriting their minds in ways that feel tragically plausible. The pacing is relentless, but it’s the quiet moments that haunt me: a mother watching her child’s eyes glow for the first time, a soldier realizing their new strength comes with a hunger for blood. The story’s moral ambiguity is its strongest suit, refusing to glorify the Enhanced while making their superiority undeniable. Sutton-Smith’s performance is a revelation. She nails the physicality of the Enhanced—listen to how she modulates her voice to convey the weight of a superhuman’s step, the way their breath fogs in the cold, the almost inhuman stillness before an attack. My only gripe? Some secondary characters blur together, especially in the audiobook’s sprawling cast. A few more distinct vocal tics for the side players would’ve helped. The production also occasionally errs on the side of *too* quiet in quieter scenes, forcing me to crank the volume. But these are minor nitpicks in an otherwise electric listening experience. If you want sci-fi that’s as much about the *cost* of evolution as the thrill of it, this is your audiobook.
