The Gate of Bones

I went into *The Gate of Bones* expecting another run-of-the-mill 40K novel, but Andy Clark’s take subverted every assumption I had. The story unfolds like a historical tragedy set in sci-fi trappings, where the real enemy isn’t the usual xenos or heretics but the weight of history itself. Clark’s worldbuilding is meticulous; Gathalamor feels like a fully lived-in planet, its culture and conflicts as vivid as the warp-tainted horrors lurking beneath its surface. The pacing is the book’s greatest strength—and its most divisive trait. Clark refuses to rush, letting scenes breathe in a way that makes the eventual moments of violence feel earned rather than manufactured. My only complaint? The middle act drags more than it needs to, and by the time the titular gate is fully revealed, I was ready for Clark to cut to the chase. John Banks’ narration is the audiobook’s shining star. His voice work is so immersive that I found myself pausing to take a breath after particularly tense passages, just to steady my own nerves. Banks nails the grimdark tone, his delivery oscillating between military precision and creeping dread with effortless skill. The production quality is top-notch, with no audio artifacts to break the spell. If I had one critique, it’s that some of the supporting characters’ accents occasionally slip into caricature—nothing that breaks immersion, but enough to pull you out of the moment for a second. Still, this is a minor quibble in an otherwise stellar experience. If you’re a 40K fan looking for something that feels fresh, or a horror lover who wants sci-fi trappings, *The Gate of Bones* is a must-listen.
