John Banks nails the narration in a way that feels less like reading and more like being dropped into the front lines of a warzone. His gravelly voice—perfectly calibrated for the Iron Warriors’ grim pragmatism—morphs seamlessly into the panicked squeaks of doomed PDF troopers, the sepulchral tones of scheming hereteks, and the icy calm of a Voidborn sorcerer. The man could read a grocery list and make it sound like a prophecy. That said, the production isn’t flawless: there’s a noticeable dip in audio fidelity during the novel’s most intense tank battles, where gunfire echoes like a tin can rattling in a hurricane, which occasionally pulls you out of the immersion. Story-wise, Wraight’s strength is his unflinching commitment to the Chaos side’s perspective, forcing the listener to confront the seductive logic of damnation. The downside? The Imperium’s defenders often feel like faceless meat shields rather than fully realized heroes, which undercuts emotional investment in their struggles. Still, the relentless momentum—especially the mid-book set-piece where a single Imperial Knight holds a choke point against an entire Traitor Legion—more than compensates. By the final act, you’ll be exhausted, exhilarated, and desperate for the next volume.
