I approached this audiobook expecting standard space opera, but Alesso’s saga quickly exceeded expectations. The narration by Virtual Voice is surprisingly effective—its synthetic precision lends Gallant’s underdog struggle a gritty, almost documentary-like texture, as if you’re listening to a military archive of humanity’s last stand. The pacing is brisk, never bloated, though the third act of Book 3 occasionally rushes, sacrificing some emotional payoff for spectacle. Gallant himself is a compelling protagonist: stubborn, flawed, and refreshingly ordinary, his natural DNA making him an anomaly in a universe obsessed with optimization. The genetic engineering angle isn’t just window dressing—it’s central to the tension, with each book diving deeper into how far humanity will go to cheat extinction, even at the cost of its soul. My only critique is that the aliens, while menacing, occasionally feel like faceless forces of nature rather than fully realized threats.
