Jim Hodges is a master at bringing out the best in young protagonists, and John Knight is no exception. His narration captures John's youthful energy and naivety, making you root for him even as he stumbles into one scrape after another. The pacing is spot on, balancing suspenseful moments with quieter, more reflective passages that delve into John's spiritual journey. I particularly loved how Hodges handles the Indian characters, giving them warmth and authenticity without resorting to stereotypes. However, I did find some of the historical details a bit heavy-handed at times, which briefly broke the narrative's flow. Overall, though, The Hidden Jewel is a gem of an audiobook that's perfect for young listeners and adults alike who enjoy historical adventure with a touch of spirituality.
