The audiobook’s strength lies in its narration: Tamaryn Payne’s portrayal of the wife, Claire, is a standout, her voice oscillating between steely resolve and breathless panic in a way that feels uncomfortably real. Christopher Bonwell’s buyer, meanwhile, is the audio equivalent of a smile that doesn’t reach the eyes—polite, persistent, and chillingly *off*. That said, the pacing stumbles slightly in the middle. Ewan spends a little too long circling the couple’s marital tensions, which, while thematically relevant, occasionally dilutes the momentum.
