The Ice Sisters

I went into The Ice Sisters expecting a standard-issue cold-case thriller, but Herron and Eby turned it into something far more unsettling. Tanya Eby’s narration is the secret weapon here. She doesn’t just read the words—she *inhabits* them. Her delivery of Ellie’s grief feels like a physical weight, every syllable dragged out like a sob caught in the throat. The supporting cast is equally strong, especially the voice work for the town’s residents, whose cheerful exteriors hide something far more sinister. The pacing is relentless, with Herron doling out clues like breadcrumbs on a forest floor, forcing the listener to lean in and piece together the puzzle alongside Ellie. That said, the story’s resolution leans a bit too heavily on coincidence for my taste. A few too many loose ends tie up neatly in the final act, as if Herron wanted to wrap up the mystery a little too tidily. And while Eby’s performance is stellar, her vocal range for certain male characters occasionally slips into caricature territory—think gruff sheriffs with voices straight out of a 1980s action flick. Still, these are minor quibbles in what is otherwise a gripping, atmospheric listen. If you love your mysteries with a side of winter-worn dread and a detective who’s as haunted as the crime scene, this audiobook will freeze itself into your playlist.
