The wrestling sections are where the audiobook *sing*—Barrett’s pacing mirrors the physicality of the sport, his delivery tightening during matches like a coiled spring. When Irving describes his coach’s hands ‘like catcher’s mitts,’ you swear you can hear the slap of flesh on vinyl. That said, the literary segments sometimes feel uneven. Irving’s reflections on Vonnegut and Cheever are poignant, but they’re interspersed with name-droppy anecdotes that don’t always land with the same emotional precision. And while the brevity is a strength, it occasionally works against him—just as a story about his first novel’s rejection starts to grip, it’s over. The production is flawless (no distracting edits or volume spikes), but I wished for more *silence* between sections; some of Irving’s heavier moments (like his coach’s death) could’ve used room to breathe.
