The Immortal Heights

Philip Battley’s narration brings *The Immortal Heights* to life in a way that feels almost unfair to the competition. He doesn’t just voice the characters—he inhabits them. His Titus is a revelation: all icy authority and simmering frustration, but with moments where his voice cracks (literally) under the weight of his own secrets. That vulnerability makes their romance feel earned, not just dramatic. Iolanthe, meanwhile, is a firecracker in his hands—Battley captures her reckless brilliance and the exhaustion of being underestimated, especially in the quieter, more exhausted scenes. My only quibble? Some side characters (particularly the villains) blur together in tone, making the political maneuvering harder to follow at times. It’s a minor hiccup in an otherwise stellar performance. Storywise, Thomas delivers a conclusion that’s both satisfying and surprising. The final act, with its back-to-back climaxes and emotional gut-punches, is relentless in the best way. The middle act drags slightly under the weight of its own lore, as if Thomas is juggling too many plot threads at once. But the audiobook’s pacing (and Battley’s pacing) keeps it from feeling like a slog. By the final chapter, you’ll be breathless, exhilarated, and already mourning the end of this world.
