I started this audiobook expecting a lighthearted Regency romance with a side of mystery, but Laurens and Brenher catapulted me into something far more gripping. Christopher Cynster isn’t the typical brooding hero—he’s a man who knows exactly what he wants (a wife, specifically of the bluestocking variety) and isn’t afraid to hunt for her, even as his investigation into counterfeit banknotes threatens to derail his plans. Brenher’s performance elevates the material; his Christopher is charm incarnate, but his portrayal of the novel’s villain—a man who oozes false politeness before striking—sends chills down your spine. The pacing is relentless, though I wish Laurens had spent a little more time developing the secondary characters, particularly the female lead, whose motivations feel undercooked in comparison to the razor-sharp plotting. The production is top-tier, with crystal-clear audio and no distracting background noise, though the runtime clocks in at a marathon 15+ hours. If you’re a fan of historical mysteries with a dash of romance and a narrator who makes every word feel intentional, this is a standout.
