This isn’t a man haunted by a single mistake—it’s a man who’s spent a decade convincing himself he’s moved on, only to realize he’s been running in place. The audiobook’s strength lies in how Machin’s performance amplifies that tension. His delivery is almost *too* calm at times, which makes the moments of raw anger or fear hit harder. I especially loved how he handles the female characters—no cartoonish voices, just distinct cadences that make them feel real. The plot’s first act is slower than Coben’s usual breakneck pace, but that’s intentional: it mirrors Matt’s denial. Once the inciting incident hits (a bar fight that spirals *way* beyond expectations), the story becomes a pressure cooker. My only critique? The villain’s motives, while twisty, rely a bit too much on coincidence in the final act. And Machin’s narration, though excellent, occasionally flattens during exposition-heavy legal scenes—his strength is dialogue, not courtroom monologues. Still, the ending’s emotional punch (no spoilers) left me sitting in my car long after the audiobook ended.
